Something Told the Wild Geese
by Rachel Field

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered,--"Snow."

Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned--"Frost."

All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly,--
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.

"The smell of burning leaf piles and apples in the air. A crisp, inviting breeze weaving aiding in a wild dance of falling leaves. Children laughing and playing in a distance, their backpacks thrown about the sidewalks and porches in happy afterschool hurries of play. Friends talking late into the evening on their porches, illuminated by a warm orange glow from paper lanterns. Hay rides and corn on the cob and jack o' lanterns and yellowed grass that crunches under your feet. Piles of leaves."

Use this community to talk about and share your autumn stories, memories, pics, graphics, tips. Whatever you wish. As long as it pertains to autumn or things relating to autumn (such as Halloween, raking leaves, etc.), cool. Keep it on topic. Thank you!

Autumn wishes, marchenland
